<image:caption>Los Cardencheros de Sapioriz are the last performing group of an acapella Mexican slave song tradition, the Canto Cardenche. Fidel Elizalde, Antonio Valles, and Guadalupe Salazar, comprise the group, documented here in their first globally distributed recording, performing traditional songs of love, despair, and the life of a campesino (rancher) dating back to the 19th Century. While the Canto Cardenche tradition has recently been celebrated by artists from Lila Downs to Mexican jazz artists, the Cardencheros de Sapioriz continue to lead humble lives on the races of Sapioriz, Durango, in the north of Mexico. On “Un Amor Pendiente”, Los Cardencheros de Sapiorz introduce us to Higinio Chavarria, the next generation of Cardencheros, who the men have asked to revive a tradition nearly extinct. This recording calls on five guest artists inspired by the Canto Cardenche. Mexican jazz singer Iraida Noriega offers a boisterous take on “Una Mañana Muy Transparente”, while pianist Alex Mercado turns “Las Golondrinas” into a beautiful study of folk jazz. Todd Clouser, Los Acardehnchados, and Aaron Cruz, recognized Mexico City based artists offer interpretations of the Canto Cardenche as well. A first of its kind recording of a one of a kind tradition. This is music for, and from, the honest human experience. released May 12, 2015</image:caption>

<image:caption>November 14th at the Black Dog Cafe in Saint Paul, Music Mission will present a first of its kind, one of a kind night of musical collaboration bridging the creative and traditional music communities of Mexico and Minnesota headlined by Son Jarocho legend Ramon Gutierrez, from Xalapa, Veracruz. Ramon will be performing solo, backed by Minnesota greats, and accompanying Minnesota artists from across genre and vision. Click here for video. Gutierrez is a composer, performing artist, and luthier based in Veracruz, Mexico. Ramon has performed across the world, from the Kennedy Center to Winnipeg Folk Festival leading his group “Son de Madera”, perhaps the most emblematic Son Jarocho (Mexican folk music from Veracruz) act in the world. An opening set by Maria Isa Pérez-Hedges, a Boricua singer, songwriter, actress, rapper, activist, youth worker and international recording artist born in Minnesota and raised on St. Paul’s West Side begins the night. A free clinic will be offered by Ramon at 3 p.m. and performances from Twin Cities based artists JT Bates, Jim Anton, Katia Cardenas and Vladimir Garrido-Biagetti alongside Gutierrez, performing their original music will run throughout the evening beginning at 6 p.m.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lakeside Guitar Festival 2023 - Marc Ribot: The Jazz Bins</image:title>
<image:caption>Saturday Aug 12th 3:00-3:50 Promenade Stage- Presented by Baird-Brennan Jandric Antkowiak Group Marc Ribot: The Jazz Bins Marc Ribot’s four months with jazz organ legend Brother Jack McDuff were his first ever with an internationally touring artist. Their 1979 itinerary included Ribot’s first concerts in Europe, and his only to date in Gary, Indiana and Rochester, NY. Although the two never recorded together (due to artistic differences that became apparent in Ribot’s later work...Brother Jack reportedly spent much of their stage time fixing Ribot with what side musicians referred to as his “death ray”), Ribot never lost his affection for McDuff’s music and the Hammond organ dominated Soul Jazz scene from which it emerged. Fellow Jazz-Bin, Greg Lewis, is not only one of the greatest virtuosos of the Hammond b3 organ alive. Says Ribot: “Greg is NYC’s best kept secret. He can tell a story on Hammond like nobody else." The Jazz-Bins use deep grooves and over the top improvisation to channel the spirits of Newark’s Key Club Sparky J’s Lounge, and NYC’s CBGB’s c/a 1977 into a quest for punk/soul salvation. The Jazz-Bins go— not exactly ‘ancient’, but ‘back’— to the future, to tap into a scene that never really existed (but should have, will, and does whenever people drop their preconceptions about ‘genre’ long enough to feel the groove), and a vibe that never really stopped. Dig it!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Saturday Aug 10th 12:00-12:45 Promenade Stage -Presented by Baird- The Jandric Antkowiak Group Jake La Botz- a rough and tumble upbringing took him from juvenile delinquency and punk rock to learning blues from the last of Chicago’s pre-war era bluesmen. From there, with guitar in tow, he made his way across the U.S.A. until he hit the end of the line in Hollywood where an improbable acting career began to unfold. La Botz has been putting out his own brand of Gospel-noir Americana. The eccentric stories, characters, and underlying spiritual messages often heard in his songs come to a head on his latest album Hair on Fire.</image:caption>

From his latest record he is embracing the country side of himself.“I grew up in the country,” he said of growing up on a couple of acres tending ponies in the Oak Cliff side of Dallas. “I am country.” Pedal steel guitar washes and waltz time underscore Long’s lilting melodies and high-key vocals in the country lament “Back to Misery (Mizzouri),” about leaving San Antone, and the uptempo “Ballad of the Lonesome Rose” makes a fine tune for dancing, while “Rock of Ages” starts with the inimitable Diamonds voice singing alone along to finger-picked acoustic guitar before exploding into an echoey canyon of high lonesome sound.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Saturday Aug 10th 2:15-3:00pm Cafe Stage (inside Dock&Paddle) Luke Callen Strange Country New Folk. The reviews are in folkx – Luke Callen is a fine songwriter – singer – and player. In an age of quick fixes, flashing screens, and pop ‘songs’ that are more formula than art, an album that takes its sweet time is a radical act. “Also Going Nowhere”, Luke Callen’s third full-length effort is just that – a collection of songs that spread out through time and space, dripping with honest Midwest charm and a mischievous glint. It’s music that you can relax into, paired with lyrics you’ll want to chew on and savor, that ask something of their listener. These songs are proof and reminder: you don’t actually have to go anywhere at all to, you know, get somewhere.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Saturday Aug 10th 3:00-3:50 Promenade Stage- Presented by Baird- The Jandric Antkowiak Group Jamaaladeen Tacuma- Few musicians leave their audiences with a feeling that they have truly witnessed something amazing. Artist/Producer/Performer/Arranger/Innovator AND Bassist - JAMAALADEEN TACUMA does just that. This native Philadelphian has always stretched the old mold of what and how a bassist is supposed to play. Tacuma has simply re-defined his instrument's artistic potential. In the mid 70's, his creatively free approach to the bass caught the eye and ear of the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Tacuma became a member of Coleman's electric band, Prime Time, he toured with the group and played on some of Coleman's historic recordings.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Friday Aug 8th 7:45-8:10pm On Como Lake!! Jeff Ray is an avant-garde resonator slide-guitarist and songwriter based in Minneapolis, MN. His music is rooted in the traditions of acoustic blues and American fingerstyle guitar, but Ray quickly departs from tradition: his songs integrate flavors of Indian classical music and West-African guitar under the cryptic guise of alternate guitar tunings. So let’s put him in a Swan Boat and paddle him around Como Lake!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Friday Aug 8th 8:15-9:15pm Promenade Stage-Presented by Baird- The Jandric Antkowiak Group Mason Jennings has a new record out this summer. Jennings writes that the songs from Underneath The Roses were, “Written in an unprecedented burst,” following the birth of his son, Western, in March 2022. Jennings explains, “I hadn’t written any songs in about a year. I had been dealing with the psychological after effects of the pandemic as well as the loss of my dad. So, when Western was born I didn’t expect to be writing much. But immediately he was responding to music in a very intense way. For this album, between May and November 2022, I wrote 48 songs! They certainly uplifted me and connected me with the creative spirit, and spirit in general, again. They cover all kinds of ground but, when I listen back, I think the central theme is overcoming fear with love.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Saturday Aug 9th 12:00-12:45 Promenade Stage -Presented by Baird- The Jandric Antkowiak Group Cassandra Johnson-During the early months of lockdown in 2020, Cassandra decided to distract herself by learning guitar. Youtube and self discipline became her teachers. Initially the intention was to learn the basics in hopes to find her songwriting instrument. However, her passion for the guitar set ablaze so deeply that she has spent much of her time playing the instrument and exploring various styles including neo-soul, jazz, funk, indie-pop, alternative, folk, country-folk, and americana. Each one of these flavors have been effortlessly balanced to create a sound all her own. Along with live performance, Cassandra has a rich online presence through her Instagram. She is the founder of Friday Riffday, a project that started as a joyful and lighthearted way for her to track her progress while learning guitar. It has grown into a successful online community, reaching individuals from around the globe and inspiring authenticity in music representation on social media. Over 1000 posts have been shared to #fridayriffday.</image:caption>

As improvisers, they’re adept at navigating jazz harmony; as writers they understand the shape of folk like melodies. On their self-titled debut album, they play sticky melodies laid on top of supple funk, ideal for cruising the streets of the group’s native Twin Cities; and ethereal ballads that could soundtrack a drive through nearby prairie. Each member is an in-demand player in and beyond the Twin Cities. Their collective credits include work with the New Standards, Chastity Brown, Ryan Bingham, and Dan Navarro. Together, they play with a sympathy born both of deep listening and true friendship.</image:caption>

They found warmth and purpose in the music that captivated the dwellers of LaPlant Road, a place named after the early settlers who established themselves in the Grand Rapids area a century prior. Together, Liz and Emily work to create new sounds, incorporating influence from their favorite genres, to craft an audio ode to many of the best things in their childhood: music, family, and friends. About the music this duo makes? It doesn't get any more duo that this, they both pick guitar formidably with the heavy lifting done by Joe while Vicki does the heavy lifting on vocals sounding like a thrush from a speakeasy on the wrong side of town in the 1920's. Serving up blues based roots music throughout, this is one of those little treasures we've been hiding out here in the heartland waiting for the rest of you to catch up with what people with the blues in Iowa can deliver.</image:caption>
